"For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth;
And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind.
But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create;
For behold, I create Jerusalem as a rejoicing,
And her people a joy.
I will rejoice in Jerusalem,
And joy in My people;
The voice of weeping shall no longer be heard in her,
Nor the voice of crying.
No more shall an infant from there live but a few days,
Nor an old man who has not fulfilled his days;
For the child shall die one hundred years old,
But the sinner being one hundred years old shall be accursed.
They shall build houses and inhabit them;
They shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
They shall not build and another inhabit;
They shall not plant and another eat;
For as the days of a tree, so shall be the days of My people,
And My elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
They shall not labor in vain,
Nor bring forth children for trouble;
For they shall be the descendants of the blessed of the LORD,
And their offspring with them.
It shall come to pass
That before they call, I will answer;
And while they are still speaking, I will hear.
The wolf and the lamb shall feed together,
The lion shall eat straw like the ox,
And dust shall be the serpent’s food.
They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain,”
Says the LORD.
(Isaiah 65:17-25 NKJV)
This passage in Isaiah is packed with such incredible hope for a better world to come. How can we even dare to think that this life and this world is all there is to hope in? How dare we put all our eggs in this pitiful basket we call earth? What are we doing when we find that all our pleasures and joys are in this world? Shame on us for settling for something that is far less superior than what God has to offer in the new heavens and the new earth. I know it seems like I've gone crazy with the underline feature in blogging; but each underlined phrase is a description of what it will be like in the new heavens and the new earth. I would like to make a couple of huge contrasts between this earth and the new earth and heavens.
The first contrast that I would point out is the terrible evil that is here on earth when it comes to pain, suffering, and violence. These things are manifested in this life by a variety of ways. Abortion, stillborn, sickness, cancer, physical pain that can't be diagnosed by doctors, disabilities, murder, rape, and the list can go on that fits the description of what is true about this earth. The new heavens and the new earth has none of that; in fact it says here that there will be only joy (v. 18) and there will be no crying or weeping (v. 19). In verse 20 of this passage, it says that the infant will no longer die within a few days and there will be no such thing as a person dying before the age of 100; now I believe that this is a figure of speech because I believe that the new earth and the new heavens are the eternal state that is described in Revelation 21 and 22. So, the contrast here is that in this life there is only pain and suffering in comparison to the life and joy that is found in the new heavens and the new earth.
The second contrast I see here in the passage between the new earth and this old earth is that work here is hard and strenuous to the mind and body. Even office jobs, creates stress and feelings of not doing things right all the time; feeling like your day wasn't successful so you must put forth extra effort to do things efficient and more successful. Well in the new heavens and the new earth, the responsibilities that we will have will always be successful and we will always enjoy the fruits of our labors; no one else will have the fruit of your labors only you and your family. Verses 21 through the beggining of verse 23 describes a situation where people will build houses and live in them, plant vineyards and enjoy the fruit, they shall enjoy the work of their hands, and they shall not labor in vain. Can you imagine what this will be like? I can't because it doesn't truly exist in this life; that surely is something to look forward to. Our responsibilities in the next life will never be tiresome or burdensome; they will always be fun and successsful; and only we will enjoy the fruits of our labors. Amazing!
The third contrast is the fact that God will be so in communion with us on the new earth and the new heavens that before we even utter a word to ask something He is immediately there to answer (v. 24). Can you imagine having a thought in your mind and before you express it to God He is there to answer physically? I don't think it quite works like that here on this earth. I've never seen God or heard God answer me immediately before I even express a request to Him. At least I'm not aware of a time. I know that God does answer prayer here in this life and that He is sovereign to answer all our questions, needs, and wants; but I guess I see the communion with God much closer and intimate in the next world than what we experience here in this world.
As you think about these three contrasts and read the passage above, I hope that you will see this as a gift to all of us who are a part of the Family of God. Who's a part of the Family of God? It is those who have recongized that they are a sinner and destined for hell without help; that help comes from our Savior Jesus Christ. All we have to do is trust in the act of Christ on the cross for our sins; the love He demonstrated for us His enemies. He redeemed us from the slave market of sin and adopted us as sons. Once you believe that this is all you need to be freed from sin then you are a part of the Family of God. Now, for us who are a part of the Family of God, I pray that we will put all of our hopes, dreams, joys, pleasures, and desires in the next life. This life is not worth it; we must not see the temporary, filthy pleasures that bombards us as something that is more desirable than what God has to offer. On the other hand, we must not be too heavenly minded that we are no earthly good. What does that mean, Josh? We must see the purpose for why we are here still on this earth. The reason why we are not immediately transported into the next life when we come to the Lord as our personal Savior is because we are to tell others about the blessed hope we have in Christ. We must care for the less-fortunate and help them to see that there is something better than the squalor of sin they are living in. I pray that we will have the compassion enough to boldly proclaim the love and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ to those who are hopless and dying in their sins. Rejoice for there is a better life to come!
